Memento Mori

Being able to see them didn’t make her like the thestrals any more, but at least it made them less scary. From her desk by the window, Hermione could see a pair of the spectral creatures lingering on the edge of the forest, skeletal wings outlined in the moonlight.

They still gave her the creeps. They were like some ghastly memento mori hidden in an old painting, reminding her of things she would rather forget. The castle had been rebuilt, the wizarding world was starting to heal, the war was over… But the very fact that she could see the thestrals now could not help but remind her of everything they’d lost in the war. Everyone they’d lost.

All the survivors saw the thestrals now.

“Hermione, what are you studying for anyway?” Ron called from the armchair by the fire, where he was practising levitating marshmallows into his mouth. “You know all this stuff. And exams are ages away!”

For once, Hermione was glad of the interruption. Snapping her textbook shut, she turned away from the window, tearing her gaze from the thestrals. Harry, Ron and Ginny looked at her in astonishment.

“Wait, really?” Ron said.

“Really,” Hermione said firmly. “Anyone for a game of gobstones?”
